Profile of the Expert
Hans Bergmans has been active as a biosafety expert since 1990, in the field of theory and practice of LMO risk assessment as well in LMO regulations. He has been involved in the development of the methodology of LMO risk assessment and of the Netherlands regulatory framework. He was secretary of the Netherlands Advisory Committee on Genetic Modification and, subsequently, senior scientist in the GMO Office of the Natl. Inst. for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). There, he was responsible for the scientific quality of risk assessments. He retired from this position on 1 January 2014. He is now active as an expert in PRRI.
He has participated as member of the Netherlands delegation in meetings COP-MOP 1-6. He has been instrumental in the preparation of the EU position on risk assessment and risk management for those meetings. He has participated as resource person in regional workshops on Capacity-Building and Exchange of Experiences on Risk Assessment and Risk Management, in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean and in Asia.
From 1990 - 2014, he was delegate to the OECD Working Group on Harmonization of Biotechnology. He has been member of the Bureau of this Working Group and chair of its Sub-working Group on Micro-organisms.
He was vice chair of the Netherlands risk assessment reserach programme ERGO (2007 - 2013).
