Dr. Andreas Heissenberger is Unit Head of the Team"Landuse and Biosafety" at the Umweltbundesamt (Environment Agency Austria).
Dr. Heissenberger is an ecologist and biochemist by training and works in the field of detection, risk assessment and monitoring of GMOs since 1996. He was head of an GMO-analysis-laboratory until 2004 and was member of the steering committee of the European Network of GMO laboratories (ENGL) until 2008.
He has carried out or co-ordinated several studies regarding monitoring and risk assessment of GMOs. Since 2003 he was responsible for several capacity building projects like training courses and workshops on the implementation of international and EU legislation, enforcement, detection and risk assessment with regard to GMOs mainly in Asia and Accession Countries to the European Union. Other responsibilities include the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, as well as scientific support to the competent authorities of Austria.
