In December 2008, the Environment Council invited the European Commission and the Member States to work on the question of the assessment of socio-economic implications of deliberate releases and placing on the market of GMOs. The Commission therefore launched a consultation of the Member States on the socio-economic implications of GMO cultivation via a questionnaire.

This report examines the outcome of the consultation. It also looks at socio-economic dimensions of GMO cultivation in third countries and summarizes EU-funded research projects to date that have addressed socio-economic perspectives of GMO cultivation.

The report concludes by identifying next steps to be taken in this area.
