Sorghum probably originated in Ethiopia and has spread to other parts of Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Australia and the United States.
Habitat range
The species can grow in arid soils and withstand prolonged droughts, from
sea-level to 1 000 m.

Mostly cultivated in areas with an annual rainfall range of 400-750 mm. It is grown in areas which are too dry for maize.

Known pathogenicity and/or allergenicity
In common with other Sorghum spp., it can contain lethal amounts of prussic acid.
