Description of the initiative
Within this context, the International Centre for Science and High Technology (ICS-UNIDO) is organizing the eBiosafety Summer School: from Global to Local Agrobiotech in cooperation with the Marche Polytechnic University (MPU) Ancona, Italy and University of Gent, Belgium to be held in Ancona, Italy from 2 to 6 July 2012.
The Summer School will feature lectures with a high-level expertise in the following sectors:
1. Technological and economic impact on agro-Industry
2. New biotechnology in plant breeding
3. Patenting and biosafety issues
4. Science communication
A specific section will be dedicated to the perspective of the Italian biotech agro-industry sector.
Eligibility
The eBiosafety Summer School will have more than 40 participants, of which only 19 will be supported by ICS. Participants will come from developing countries, countries in economic transition as well as from industrialized countries and, more specifically, from institutions with established backgrounds in Agro Food Management. Worldwide recognized experts will deliver presentations at the event. In the selection of participants, preference will be given to applicants who actively participate in their country's programmes on biotechnology, biosafety and agrobiotech applications in agro-industries.
ICS-UNIDO invited participants (19) will be provided with the following:
* round-trip transportation, in economy or second class, from the participant¡¦s city of residence to Ancona, Italy (electronic tickets will be issued by ICS-UNIDO in accordance with UNIDO travel standards, using the most direct and economical route)
* ad-hoc DSAs (daily subsistence allowances) of 130 Euro (as per ICS travel itinerary and up to a maximum of 6 nights) to cover accommodation, meals and miscellaneous expenses. To cover incidental travel expenses, participants involved in continental travel will also receive one ad hoc DSA of EUR 100, while participants involved in intercontinental travel will receive two DSAs of EUR 100.

Objective and main expected outcomes or lesson learned
* To provide students and participants with the unique opportunity to develop advanced skills in formulating and assessing applications for environmental releases and/or food and feed use of biotechnology-derived products through practical training provided by renowned and experienced competent institutions such as the MPU.
* To strengthen professional expertise in biosafety by training attending students through the participation as lectures of recognized International experts with decades long experience in modern biotechnology;
* To provide specialized knowledge and skills with regard to environmental risk assessment, food safety standards, application and management of rules related to food safety in different sectors as well as strategies for setting-up capacity building facilities in developing countries.
