Profile of the Expert
Since 2005 I am scientific officer in the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the German competent authority for LMO. I am responsible for the risk assessment and risk management of LMOs in applications for the deliberate release and applications for placing on the market according to German and EU law and the preparation of decisions and national statements.
My expertise comprises genetics, including population and molecular genetics, food/feed safety assessment based on nutritional, toxicological and feeding studies as well as in environmental risk assessments.
Regulatory aspects of new molecular techniques esp. Gene Drives, RNAi and genome editing techniques are another focus of my work.
I provide expertise in the area of risk assessment and risk management to the German government in context with the Cartagena Protocol and was member of the German delegation in recent conferences under the CBD.

Main areas of responsibility
As Project manager for field trials of LMO I was responsible for the safe handling and monitoring of LMO in these trials. For application dossiers I had to prepare environmental risk assessments and develop practical risk management measures for the execution of field trials.
At the same time I participated an initiated international projects with partners in Indonesia, Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini and Brazil. The common topic of these projects was the preservation and utilization of biodiversity of crop plants. This included the development of a participatory breeding strategy for neglected crops with small scale farmers.
