There are approximately 300 Iris species. Taxonomy is complex and there are multiple centers of origin; South West Asia; southern Europe and Mediterranean.

Iris is cultivated in temperate regions of the world and cut flowers may be distributed globally.
Known pathogenicity and/or allergenicity
Iris species are non-epiphytic. Some species of Iris (for example Iris pseudacorus) are known to have poisoned cattle and swine and if the rhizomes are ingested are also toxic to humans. Plant extracts may also can cause dermatitis in sensitive humans. The compounds conferring toxicity are irisin, iridin, or irisine.
