Description
A fragment of the gene coding for the amino acid permease 1 from Solanum tuberosum, which is expressed predominantly in leaves, is constitutively expressed in an antisense orientation in the transgenic potato plants.

As a result of the genetic modification, the production of endogenous amino acid permease is inhibited thereby leading to a reduction in amino acid transport from the leaves to the tubers and, consequently, resulting in a reduction in the content of soluble nitrogen compounds in the tubers.

The Nitrogen/Carbon ratio in the tubers was significantly reduced in some anti-StAAP1 lines. In addition, changes in the amino acid composition and the carbohydrate content in the tubers were observed.
Recipient Organism or Parental Organisms
The term Recipient organism refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas Parental organisms refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.
