  • Advises the National Biosafety Authority during the review of animal-based GMO applications.
  • Together with the National Biosafety Authority, the Agency supervises the movement of animal-based GM materials between trials and facilities.
  • Issuance of import, export or transit permits for animal-based GMOs.
  • Together with the National Biosafety Authority, the Agency Inspects and audits of trial sites to ensure adherence to the approval conditions.
  • The Agency submits monitoring reports on GMOs released to the environment.
Detailed description of the regulatory functions
Directorate of Veterinary Services is a regulatory agency tasked with the responsibility of preventing and controlling animal diseases and pests to safeguard human health, improve animal welfare, increase livestock productivity and quality and facilitate trade. It has the following functions:

•  Certifies veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biologics, animals, emerging livestock, their products and by-products to be pure, safe, potent and/or efficacious.
•  Tests and monitors the presence of harmful residues in animals, emerging livestock, their products and by-products.
•  Inspect facilities that manufacture veterinary vaccines and veterinary biologics, and also facilities in which animals and emerging livestock are slaughtered and those that process animal products and by-products
•  Prevent introduction into the country of harmful foreign organisms, pests and diseases through adherence to strict quarantine regulations and procedures.
•  Certifies veterinary imports and exports to ensure that they are of high and acceptable quality.
•  Supervise and monitor introduction of livestock, arthropods and micro-organisms in Kenya.
•  Participation in institutional Biosafety Committees
