Profile of the expert
Prof. Menaka Hapugoda is a Professor in Molecular Medicine and Medical Entomology, Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya holding a Ph.D degree in Medical Parasitology and a B.Sc special degree in Zoology. She was a Post Doctoral Fellow at International Centre for Genetic and Biotechnology and working on recombinant gene products for 2 years. She is the Principal Investigator in number of research projects worth SRLRs. 63 millions and EURO 627,011 and country coordinator in South-East Asian regional(RAS5/082) and inter-regional(INT5/155) IAEA/FAO networks on modified vectors. She has functioned as an international Expert for “Pakistan 5049 FAO/IAEA Workshop on “Dengue”. Also, she has functioned as an international consultant for two projects funded by the IAEA. Further, she was a Consultant in Malaria Elimination Programme in Sri Lanka funded by the GLOBAL FUND for 5 years and was the Rapporteur drafting, “National Biotechnology act-Medicine Section” in 2012

Teaching to under graduate and postgraduate students in Molecular Medicine, Medical and molecular Entomology, Genetic Engineering for 13 years as a senior academic staff member. Principal Investigator, national technical co-operation project titled “Application of Molecular Diagnostics in Zoonotic Diseases in Sri Lanka” funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (TC-SRL TC-SRL/5/042), 2009-2012. 2. Principal Investigator, research project titled “Performance of recombinant proteins as diagnostic intermediates of Chikungunya, Dengue and Leptospirosis” funded by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Grant number CRP/SRI 08-2) and National Science Foundation (NSF) (RG/2009/BT/01), 2008-2011. Modified vectors (Sterile male mosquitoes using ionizing radiations, transgenic mosquitoes and Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes) 1. Principal Investigator, National technical cooperation project titled “Establishing a national centre for Research, Training and Services in Medical and Molecular Entomology for vector-borne diseases control” by the International Atomic Energy Agency (TC SRL 5/47), 2016-2020. 2. Principal Investigator, Coordinated Research Project (CRP) titled “Establishment of mechanical, behavioral, genetic and molecular methods of sex separation in dengue vector mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti by the International Atomic Energy Agency (CRP D44001), 2017-2018. 3. Principal Investigator, Target oriented comprehensive research project on an operational model to control dengue in Sri Lanka using multiple vector control intervention, new product development and community engagement” by the National Research Council (NRC) (TO 12-14), 2015-2019 (SRL Rs. 50 millions) 4. Co-Investigator, High-tech transgenic approaches to control dengue by genetic engineering mosquito vector Aedes aegypti” funded by the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development Operation (AHEAD) under Development Oriented Research Grant (DOR) STEM to the University of Colombo, 2019-2021 (SRL Rs. 40 millions)
