The Global Industry Coalition (GIC) for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety receives input and direction from trade associations representing thousands of companies from all over the world. Participants include associations representing and companies engaged in a variety of industrial sectors such as plant science, seeds, agricultural biotechnology, food production, animal agriculture, human and animal health care, and the environment.

The GIC is the representative group for the private sector in the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol.  Its members draft submissions, provide expertise to expert working groups, and regulatory participate in the meetings of the Parties and other intersessional meetings in order to provide the viewpoints of the private sector to the discussions of the Parties.  Representatives of the GIC are actively involved in ongoing capacity building efforts sponsored by the private sector and other international organizations.  In addition, representatives of the GIC are also involved in the workings of the Informal Advisory Committee on the BCH, the Liaison Group on Capacity Building, the Coordinating Committee on Capacity Building, and the Working Group on Liability and Redress.  Information on the GIC and its positions on Protocol implementation issues can be found at: http://www.croplife.org.
