The beta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase catalyzes the
transfer of sialic acid onto exposed GalPl-4GlcNAc termini of
N-linked oligosaccharides common to serum and cell surface
glycoproteins. Although this sialyltransferase has widespread
tissue distribution, it is particularly abundant in liver, the
major site of serum glycoprotein synthesis.
