The Belgian Biosafety Server is developed and managed by the Biosafety and Biotechnology Unit (SBB) of the Scientific Institute of Public Health (WIV-ISP). The SBB provides scientific advice in the field of biosafety (biological safety), i.e. in relation with the assessment of risks for human and animal health and the environment associated with activities carried out using pathogenic organisms and/or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and derived products at the R&D or commercial level. The Belgian Biosafety Server aims at providing practical and factual information on scientific and regulatory aspects related to biosafety. Its primary objective is to serve as a technical resource for people involved in abovementioned activities, by assisting them to comply with the relevant regulatory requirements, to carefully assess potential biological risks associated with such activities and to apply appropriate risk management measures. The Biosafety Advisory Council advises the Belgian competent authorities about the safety for human health and the environment (including genetic and ecological aspects related to biodiversity) of any activities using LMOs (GMOs), in particular the deliberate release of LMOs in the environment and the placing on the market of LMOs, LMO-based or LMO-derived products. The Council is composed of representatives of the Regional and Federal competent authorities. It is assisted by experts organized in thematic ad hoc groups. Bhutan ratified the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1995 by the 73rd session of the National Assembly. Consequent to the ratification of the convention, Bhutan developed the first Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) of Bhutan in 1998 – a guiding policy document for conservation and sustainable utilization of biological resources of the country. Concurrently, the National Biodiversity Centre was instituted in 1998 as a non-departmental agency under the Ministry of Agriculture with the mandate to coordinate biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization programs in the country, and the implementation of Biodiversity Action Plan (s).
