Filling the list of background material for the Roadmap
[#1673]
Dear colleagues,
Yesterday I sent you already by e-mail the present version of a list of background materials to the Roadmap that I am preparing.
The way this list has been prepared is explained in the document.
Please take notice that this is just a current version for your information on the ongoing work.
It will still be amended during the next two weeks, before 31 August, and I will be sending out more proposals during this period.
Best regards,
Hans

Proposal for the presentation of the documents on the list of background materials to the Roadmap
[#1674]
Dear colleagues,
I attach a proposal for how to present the documents in the internet list of background materials for the Roadmap.
It gives an example how the presentation would look for the documents listed as background to the general introduction, in the document that I presented in the previous posting.
Best wishes,
Hans

RE: Proposal for the presentation of the documents on the list of background materials to the Roadmap
[#1680]
Dear colleagues,
I already sent you by e-mail the tentative list of the combined background materials as suggested by the participants of the AHTEG in the online discussion for this subject (see
https://bch.cbd.int/onlineconferences/portal_ahteg_ra.shtml?threadid=1642. I now also put this lidt on our discussion site.
The list is still far from finalized: the items are only tentatively allocated to the headings of the Roadmap, and there will still be not-intended duplications; the presentation has not yet been normalized.
For the proposal for normalization see my comment in the thread
https://bch.cbd.int/onlineconferences/portal_ahteg_ra.shtml?threadid=1673.
The main reason for presenting this list to you now is to enable you to check wether you are missing items that you submitted, and to show the progress of the work.
Should you want to make amendments please remember: submissions must contain full bibliographic details as well as a URL where the material is publicly available.
Any comments please before Monday 30 August COB your time.
I will have to finalize the list on 31 August.
Best regards,
Hans

RE: Filling the list of background material for the Roadmap
[#1676]
Dear colleagues,
I already sent you an e-mail concerning the documents that I am posting here:
"backgr docs to the roadmap for risk assessment revised version 100826.doc"
The documents on this list have been taken from the “List of guidance materials available in the biosafety information resource centre of the biosafety clearing house”, and will be added to the list of background documents for the Roadmap.
"Documents not included as background documents 100826.doc"
This provides a list of the documents on the “List of guidance materials available in the biosafety information resource centre of the biosafety clearing house” that I propose will NOT be added to the list of background documents for the Roadmap.
This is the final proposal for how to deal with these documents.
I would appreciate to receive any reactions a.s.a.p., before Sunday evening, 29 August, your time.
Best regards,
Hans

RE: Filling the list of background material for the Roadmap
[#1677]
Dear colleagues,
The consequence of our present discussion on which documents would or would not be acceptable as background documents for the Roadmap has some consequences for the presnt list, on
http://bch.cbd.int/onlineconferences/roadmapref_ahteg_ra.shtml.
In the attached document I propose to strike a few documents from this list, based on these considerations.
As before, I already sent you this list by e-mail.
This is also for your comments, before Sunday night, 29 August, your time.
Best regards,
Hans

RE: Filling the list of background material for the Roadmap
[#1678]
Hi Hans,
First of all, many thanks for your continues efforts on this - we are almost there.
I would like to respond specifically to a few documents in the second list of documents that you suggest to remove from inclusion.
1) Record ID 101041, "Appendix I - Molecular genetic characterization data (International agreement USDA-APHIS, Canadian Food Inspection Agency" has been suggested for removal as outdated. After reviewing the document, I fail to see specifically where the guidance here is outdated, and it seems very relevant to the hazard ID step.
Further, the documents that are suggested as "equivalent" (BIRC record ID 4848) are not equivalent, but complimentary. The text from one of the second documents (record 48485) unequivocally states this is the case. From the introduction: "The environmental data are seen as a complement to the molecular characterization data which Canada and the United States identified in their technical discussion in 1998 [Record ID 101041, above]".
For these reasons, I think this contribution from Canada and the US regulatory agencies, Record ID 101041, should be included.
2) Exclusion of documents on micro-organisms, and particularly on the basis that they are "likely to be covered in future specific guidance document(s)".
From my perspective as a microbial biologist, I have to say that the microbial communities of ecosystems count as biological diversity (and are important members for many ecosystem services), and therefore guidance on micro-organisms should be included. Further, "micro-organisms" is a generic term, sometimes limited to prokaryotes, but not always, and may include soil arthropods.
Also, speculation that they may (should? will?) receive eventual treatment in future guidance should not be a basis for current exclusion.
Therefore, I would ask that guidance micro-organisms (sensu latu) also be included.
Many thanks,
David Q

RE: Filling the list of background material for the Roadmap
[#1679]
Dear Hans, All,
My AHTEG meter has run out, so I am sending now a short list of suggested additions and deletions (see attached) within the heading and subheadings that Hans has put forth. For most, a inserted comment on my reasoning is included.
Thanks Hans to your dedication to this weighty task!
Best,
David Q
