Expected Outcomes:

The following outcomes are expected from the discussions:

Theme 1 – 3: Strengthened familiarity with and guidance to access to biosafety information, including:

(a) Subject to available funding, based on decision BS-V/13, paragraph 7, and the operational objective 1.3 of the programme of work, a toolkit on public access to biosafety information for Parties and other stakeholders implementing the programme of work;

(b) Subject to available funding, based on decision BS-V/13, paragraph 7, and the operational objective 2.1 of the programme of work, a background document for a series of regional capacity-building workshops to implement the programme of work;

(c) Based on decision BS/V-13, paragraph 4, a summary of the outcomes in a report at the eight meeting of the Parties;

(d) Resource materials in the BCH as a repository of documents and other resource materials.

Discussion Group 1: The meaning, scope and importance of public access to biosafety information

Article 23 of the Protocol requires Parties to endeavour to ensure that public awareness and education encompass access to information on living modified organisms identified in accordance with the Protocol that may be imported.

This online forum aims to facilitate exchange of views and information regarding the meaning, scope and importance of public access to information on biosafety in the context of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The outcomes of the discussion are intended to contribute to the implementation of programme element 3 of the Programme of Work on public awareness, education and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of LMOs, which was adopted by the fifth meeting of the Parties to the Protocol in decision BS-V/13.

Please note that each theme has guiding questions.

Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations are invited to nominate individuals involved in, or responsible for, promoting public awareness, education and participation at the national level to participate in the Forum.

Nominations should be sent to the Secretariat by email ulrika.nilsson@cbd.int or andrew.bowers@cbd.int.
