About the Source Vocabularies

In accordance with its modalities of operation, the Biosafety Clearing-House makes use, where appropriate, of a controlled vocabulary to describe records, which can be translated into the official United Nations languages, to facilitate the ability to search for records in all languages. Where possible, the translations are taken from existing sources, including international multilingual thesauruses. Where available, the source for a translation is indicated in its thesaurus entry.

The following sources provide the primary source material for most of the terms included in the BCH Thesaurus.

ENVOC Multilingual Thesaurus of Environmental Terms

Information about the resource:	EnVoc is a multilingual thesaurus with a controlled and structured vocabulary for use in indexing, storing and retrieval of environmental information. Envoc is no longer maintained, but has been used where relevant terms exist.

CABI Codes (CABC)

Information about the resource:	CABICODES have been derived from the classification schemes used in the AGRICOLA and AGRIS databases, with changes made to allow for differences in subject scope and emphasis. This resource is also used by ICGEB to classify their bibliographic records.
