During the recent COP-MOP8, Malaysia was involved in a Side Event on the Asia Biosafety Clearing House (Asia BCH). This event took place on 14 December, 2016 at Cancun Mexico.
This event was organized in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme and the Korean Biosafety Clearing House. A powerful message that was conveyed through this and the establishment of the Asia BCH Family was that the Asian countries have realized the importance of enhancing their existing collaborative mechanisms in order to be self-sustaining by the year 2020 and beyond and also to spearhead the movement towards compliance to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety as a region.
Malaysia was represented by the Director General of Biosafety, Mr. Letchumanan Ramatha in this event. He gave a talk on the Asia BCH Roadmap as Enhance of Regional Cooperation to Improve Compliance. Malaysia through the Department of Biosafety has been actively participating in all the meetings and preparatory work leading towards this event. It is hoped that with this significant commitment towards building this Asia BCH Family, Malaysia can continue to work together with the other countries in the region in the area of biosafety.
