TajikistanTajikistan - The 25th National Project Coordinators Meeting on Biosafety in Asia
The 25th National Project Coordinators Meeting (Asia) took place in Dushanbe. Representatives of 6 countries took part in the meeting: Bangladesh (Mr. Haider Solaiman), Jordan (Mr. Bilal Qtishat), India (Mr. Kunal Singh and Ms. Vibha Ahuja), Iran (Mr. Eskandar Omidinia and Mr. Khashayar Babaie), Turkey (Mr. Hasan Gezginc and Ms. Birgul Guner), as well as representatives of the UN Environment (Mr. Alex Owusu-Biney and Ms. Ruth Irungu) and representatives from Tajikistan (Mr. Neimatullo Safarov, Ms. Tatiana Novikova, Mr. Dilovarsho Dustov, Mr. Vladimir Lekarkin, Ms. Madina Mirakova, Mr. Firuz Safarov, Ms. Bonui Sharifzoda and Ms. Kumushoy Murtazakulova).The meeting has been co-hosted by the National Biodiversity and Biosafety Center of the Committee on Environment Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, that is the National Competent Authority of the Republic of Tajikistan on biosafety issues.

From September 17 till September 21, participants shared their experiences in the implementation of biosafety projects, identified risks and lessons learned. Also, one of the important issues that has been discussed during the meeting is the preparation for the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which is to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on 17-29 November 2018. Participants received the information and skills necessary for more effective cooperation under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

In addition, the participants discussed the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety - the importance of its ratification and implementation. The Supplementary Protocol designed to contribute to the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity through the establishment of international rules and procedures in the field of liability and redress associated with living modified organisms.

The last day of the meeting participants has deeply went through the procedures on biosafety frameworks, biosafety thematic issues and the harmonization methods of biosafety national systems.
