Dato' Dr. Gurdial Singh Nijar has been following the negotiations on the Cartagena Protocol from the outset. He is also Malaysia's lead negotiator for the negotiations on Liability and Redress that culminated in the establishment of the Nagoya KL Supplementary Protocol. He was previously the Director of the Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity Law (CEBLAW). CEBLAW was established by the Government of Malaysia and Universiti Malaya to provide expertise to national, regional and international bodies, as well as third world Governments on issues pertaining to Biodiversity and Biosafety Law. He was nominated by the Asia Pacific Group to be a member of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and served as a Committee member from 2004 to 2008. He designed and taught a course on Biodiversity and Biosafety Law for post-graduate students at the Universiti Malaya. Finally, he has also written widely on the subject of Biosafety.
