Detailed information
New and emerging technologies can contribute to Africa’s efforts to foster innovation and accelerate socio-economic development. It is recognized that there are potential risks associated with such new technologies, which require further consideration with full participation of African scientists, policy makers, and active engagement of affected communities. Inherent in the novelty of any emerging technology is a lack of prior experience and therefore a level of uncertainty that regulatory authorities may not have previously confronted. It is important that the risk assessment process make use of all available decision support tools and methods. The aim of the Workshop was to provide an opportunity to a group of ten professionals in Africa selected based on their prior experience conducting or supporting risk assessments performed by national regulatory agencies to gain an initial exposure to methods of qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative risk assessment, complementing the methods they currently use in their countries.

Results
  • Initiating training in the use of quantitative and qualitative risk assessment for regulators, developers, scientists, and researchers involved in the assessment and decision-making process for GMOs and new genetic biocontrol products in Africa.

  • Supporting scientists and developers to develop harmonized standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines to support IBCs in the region to undertake risk assessment and development of regulatory dossiers.

  • CSIRO reports could be used as suggestions to help develop guidance on probabilistic elicitation procedures and how these methods can be incorporated into GMO risk assessments and decision-making process.
