General Information
Profile of the expert
The expert had an undergraduate degree in medical technology from Siliman University, and MSc and PhD in microbiology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), with sub-specialization in molecular genetics from the Universidad de Leon, Spain. He finished a training course on Biotechnology in Crop Protection sponsored by UPLB and the International Rice Research Institute and more recently a Biosecurity Training Workshop sponsored by the Sandia National Laboratories of the US Department of Energy. He has been serving as Institutional Biosafety Committee Chair and Biosafety Officer for more than five years, and is a Regular Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines recognized in the field of microbial biotechnology. The expert has been teaching molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology, and microbiology and is actively involved in bacterial virulence and drug discovery researches. He has authored/co-authored several papers in international referred journals and is currently the Director of Research.

An additional task about to be given to the expert is to serve as Biorisk Officer responsible for heading the Institutional Biosecurity Management Committee whose main responsibility is to see to it that the risk of intentional theft, misuse, or release of pathogens and toxins is either reduced or eliminated. Another responsibility is to create awareness on biosafety and biosecutiry issues and measures among students, faculty members, and the community.
