Characteristics of the protein coding sequence
Cry2Ae delta-endotoxin
ES
Cry2Ae protein as expressed in cotton has 631 amino acids. The deduced molecular weight is
71 kDa. The Cry2Ae protein is effective in controlling lepidopteran plant feeding larvae such as cotton bollworm larvae, tobacco budworm larvae and fall armyworm larvae which are common pests of cotton.

Additional Information
Cry proteins, of which Cry2Ae is one among many, act by selectively binding to specific sites localized on the lining of the midgut of susceptible insect species. Following binding, pores are formed that disrupt midgut ion flow, causing gut paralysis and eventual death due to bacterial sepsis. Cry2Ae is lethal when eaten by the larvae of certain insects and its specificity of action is directly attributable to the presence of specific binding sites in the target insects.
