Sri Lanka is a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) to the Convention on Biological Diversity and has developed a National Biosafety Framework (NBF) in 2005. Sri Lanka is committed to regulate activities involving GMOs, also referred to as Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology to ensure their safe use. In this context, The “Guidelines for the conduct of confined field trials (CFTs) of GM plants in Sri Lanka” have been prepared to provide guidance on the process of applications and authorization for the conduct of CFTs of GM plants in Sri Lanka.
