The genetically modified plants express the coding region of inorganic pyrophosphatase from Escherichia coli which is specifically expressed in photosyntetically active mesophyll cells.

As a result of the genetic modification the production of the heterologous pyrophosphatase leads to the removal of cytoplasmatic pyrophosphate which results in the preferential production of sucrose in the modified potato plants.
The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.
