Bacillus laterosporus inhabits similar environments to Bacuillus thuringiensis. It can be isolated from a wide variety of environments, such as soil, rocks, gemstones, compost, insects, animal hide, wool, quails, gelatin-factory effluent leaves, freshwater and saltwater. It has also been report to be present in cheese, beans, honey, milk and starchy foods.

Broad-spectrum biopesticidal potential was been reported against invertebrates in different orders including Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, nematodes and mollusks. Research has also shown that the bacteria can inhibit the growth of fungal pathogens and other bacteria. It may have algacidal activity as well. Genome sequencing revealed the bacteria's potential to produce polyketides, nonribosomal peptides, and toxins. It is not considered a human pathogen.

Additional Information
Bacillus laterosporus is an aerobic, Gram-positive, endospore forming bacilli. It has been considered a probiotic for humans and a feed additive for birds. The bacteria produces a variety of antibiotic compounds.

The genome is 5.34 Mb in size. It is common for multiple plasmids to be present.
