Insect resistant Herbicide tolerant Maize
Event 32
The transgenic maize line DAS-59132-7 was genetically modified to resist Coleopteran insects (e.g. western corn rootworm, northern corn rootworm and Mexican corn rootworm) and to tolerate herbicides containing glufosinate ammonium.
The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.
Maize line: Hi-II
  • DAS-59122-7 - Herculex™ RW Rootworm Protection maize
    | Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. | Resistance to diseases and pests (Insects, Coleoptera (beetles)), Resistance to herbicides (Glufosinate)
Characteristics of the modification process
  • Agrobacterium-mediated DNA transfer
Some of these genetic elements may be present as fragments or truncated forms. Please see notes below, where applicable.
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-100362-7 Ubiquitin gene promoter | Zea mays (Maize, Corn, MAIZE)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-14994-9 Cry34Ab1 | Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt, Bacillus, BACTU)
Protein coding sequence | Resistance to diseases and pests (Insects, Coleoptera (beetles))
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-100367-4 Proteinase inhibitor II gene terminator | Solanum tuberosum (Potato, SOLTU)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-100368-6 Peroxidase gene promoter | Triticum aestivum (Wheat)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-14995-8 Cry35Ab1 | Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt, Bacillus, BACTU)
Protein coding sequence | Resistance to diseases and pests (Insects, Coleoptera (beetles))
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-100287-7 CaMV 35S promoter | Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-15002-4 Phosphinothricin N-acetyltransferase gene | Streptomyces viridochromogenes (STRVR)
Protein coding sequence | Resistance to herbicides (Glufosinate)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-100290-6 CaMV 35S terminator | Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV)
The cry34Ab1 and cry35Ab1 were cloned from Bacillus thuringiensis strain PS149B1 and the coding sequence of both genes has been adapted to the codon usage in maize as to achieve expression in the maize plant.

Southern blot analysis indicated that a single insert of the transformation cassette was introduced into the modified maize. A 450bp truncation of the 5' end was detected, which resulted in a 200bp truncation of the Ubiquitin gene promoter. The absence of the spectinomycin and tetracycline resistance genes from the vector backbone was shown by hybridizing the Southern blots with spc and tet probes.
