  23 Feb 2022

UNEA 5.2 & UNEP@50 Flagship Side Event “35 years of compliance mechanisms under Multilateral Environmental Agreements”

Date/Time: Friday 4 March, 2022, 13:15 - 14:45 EAT

The event celebrates 35 years of implementation and compliance mechanisms established under eight multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) administered by UNEP including the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The event will provide an opportunity to take stock of the contributions of implementation/compliance mechanisms for achieving the objectives of MEAs and provide lessons for the possible negotiation of future legally binding instruments. The themes to be addressed in the event include:

  • Implementation and compliance mechanisms: between diplomacy and law
  • Reporting under MEAs: providing guidance to Parties to support implementation and effectiveness of MEAs and for their future development
  • Success stories in overcoming challenges with reporting under MEAs
  • Lessons for a future legal instrument on plastics?

As part of the event, Ms. Jimena Nieto Carrasco, Vice-Chair and former Chair of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, will be speaking on the experience of the Committee in promoting compliance with the obligation to submit a national report.

This side-event is organized in a hybrid format and will be held in English.
