Post-2020 processes relevant to the Biosafety Protocol

In 2010, the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and the Strategic Plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety were adopted, setting out targets and objectives to be achieved by the year 2020. In 2012, the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol adopted the Framework and Action Plan for Capacity-Building for the Effective Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, to support Parties in their efforts to give effect to the Strategic Plan on Biosafety and to support the implementation of the Protocol. These three instruments come to an end in 2020.

In 2018, the Conference of the Parties decided on a process for the development of a post 2020 global biodiversity framework, also addressing biosafety (COP decision 14/34). The meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol decided to develop an Implementation Plan for the Cartagena Protocol (decision CP-9/7) and a Protocol-specific action plan for capacity building (decision CP-9/3). A central role in the development of these instruments was assigned to the Liaison Group on the Cartagena Protocol.

These pages provide information on:
  1. the development of the Implementation Plan for the Cartagena Protocol post 2020;
  2. the development of the action plan for capacity building for implementation of the Cartagena Protocol and the Supplementary Protocol; and
  3. the process for providing biosafety-related input to the development of the post 2020 global biodiversity framework and related processes.
