Latitude and longitude information of the trial site
[#1286]
I still believed that we need to make specific statement for latitude and longitude of the release site in the roadmap (step 2 point d) when we mentioned geographical information. That data should be easily obtained by a GPS meter even in a poor country. With that important information we can exactly locate the site of trial and be able to avoid any admixture in the following rotation or GM crops release. In China we request to provide only the name of the village of the trial and a simple map instead of the exact latitude and longitude values in our regulation. That probably could pose difficulties in management and monitoring. So why not make clear request for latitude and longitude information of the trial site? This roadmap would be an useful guidance for countries that are willing to develop good management regulations.

This message illustrates very well the comments that I and numerous others have now posted regarding the distinction between information required for field trials versus information required for commercial release, and whether the roadmap ought to be applied to these two types of activities or just commercial release. The ability to pinpoint a field trial by GPS coordinates highlights the fact that it is limited in space (and of course in time). Commercial releases will not be subject to the same restrictions.
Having said this, I do not think that we need to explicitly list these types of requirements in the points to consider, since the broader categories about receiving environment would cover whatever individual countries might request.

I think that we still have better to know such information even for commercial release. In China, a limited number provinces were normally approved for commercialization of a kind of GM crop. The exact locating of the sites would facilitate monitoring and managing any risk.
