The Rio Institute
Building Knowledge, Ensuring Safety, Promoting Sustainability
Established in 2024, the Rio Institute is a non-profit research organisation dedicated to fostering the safe and sustainable integration of new biotechnologies into agriculture and the environment. As the world faces escalating challenges such as climate change, food insecurity and ecosystem degradation, biotechnology has proposed potential solutions. However, these technologies raise complex questions regarding their environmental, agricultural and human health implications.
Named in honor of the pivotal Rio Declaration (1992) and its emphasis on the Precautionary Principle, the Institute is fundamentally committed to advancing independent, science-based risk assessment of emerging biotechnologies. Our core mission is to support the integration of biotechnologies into agriculture and biodiversity conservation by generating independent scientific knowledge and developing robust governance frameworks in a manner that upholds global environmental and social objectives.
The work of the Rio Institute is intrinsically aligned with the three Environmental Rio Conventions: the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). These conventions collectively form the foundation for sustainable development, emphasizing biodiversity conservation, climate stability, and land integrity.
Our primary objectives include generating evidence-based insights on the impacts of emerging biotechnologies, strengthening institutional capacity for independent evaluation, establishing standardized risk assessment frameworks, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and building expert capacity to address complex biotechnology challenges.
To achieve these goals, the Institute focuses on three key activities:
- Research & Development: Generating robust, evidence-based knowledge on biotechnology risks and impacts to inform policy and decision-making.
- Capacity Building & Education: Strengthening global capacity for independent biotechnology evaluation through training and knowledge transfer.
- Science Diplomacy & Policy Advice: Supporting evidence-based governance of emerging biotechnologies and facilitating international dialogue.
The Rio Institute believes that rigorous, independent research and robust governance are paramount for the sustainable integration of biotechnologies. We are confident that our work will significantly contribute to the objectives of the UN CBD, ensuring that biotechnological innovations serve as a force for environmental protection and sustainable development.
