Risk can be estimated by evaluating the severity of the consequences of a hazard and the likelihood that they be realised.

The term “risk” does not have a single unambiguous definition but it is often defined as “the probability of harm”. This is broadly understood as the likelihood that a harmful consequence will occur as the result of an action or condition.

Risk is often assessed through the combined evaluation of hazard and exposure.
