Result of the decision
Approval of the import and/or use of the LMO(s) with conditions
Fertile plant material has to be transported and stored in closed and clearly labelled repositories at any time outside the release site and laboratory. The label needs to distinctively describe the LMO. When transporting sugarbeet seeds the dispersal of seeds has to be prevented.
Tools used for sowing on the release site have to be cleaned in order to minimize the unintended dispersal of seeds.

If the genetically modified plants are not transferred to a genetic engineering facility the plant material remaining on the field site has to be dug into the upper soil of the field; fertile plant material may be transported into a laboratory if the germination capacity is disrupted in the course of the analyses.

After completion of the field trial the release site and the surrounding area (5 m) have to be inspected for one year regularly, at least every four weeks. Sugarbeet volunteers need to be removed or inactivated before flowering. The soil must not be dug over in the year of the control period.

The decision on this deliberate release was made by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
The RKI was the competent national authority for the German Gene Technology Act before the competences were transferred to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit, BVL) on April 1st 2004. Deliberate releases that were authorized by the RKI prior to this date are now handled by the BVL.
