Profile of the expert
Prof. Douglas Miano studied BSc. Agriculture (1991-1995) and M.Sc. in Plant Pathology at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi (1997-1999), Kenya and a Ph.D in Plant Virology from Louisiana State University, USA (2003-2008). He is an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection, University of Nairobi (UoN). He worked as a Senior Scientist at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute’s (KARI) Biotechnology Center in Nairobi, where he was the program leader in root and tuber crops research and plant disease diagnostics. His specialization includes plant virology and biotechnology. He is involved in research on cassava, sweetpotato, and maize virus diagnostics and characterization. He is the Kenyan lead scientist in the development of transgenic cassava with resistance to viruses under the Virus Resistant Cassava for Africa (VIRCA) project. He has experience in communications, biosafety and regulatory issues in the management of GMOs.
