Sprivivirus cyprinus was first identified in Europe in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and is recognized as the causative agent of Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC).

Sprivivirus cyprinus infects freshwater fish, primarily common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and other cyprinid species. The virus occurs in freshwater aquaculture facilities and natural freshwater environments.
Sprivivirus cyprinus has been reported in Europe, Asia and North America and is associated with the culture and trade of common carp and ornamental fish.
Sprivivirus cyprinus is the causative agent of Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC), a contagious viral disease affecting common carp and other susceptible fish species. Clinical signs may include haemorrhages of the skin and internal organs, abdominal distension, lethargy, abnormal swimming behaviour and increased mortality. The virus is not known to infect humans.

Sprivivirus cyprinus is an enveloped negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Rhabdoviridae. The viral genome encodes five major structural proteins: nucleoprotein (N), phosphoprotein (P), matrix protein (M), glycoprotein (G) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L).
The viral glycoprotein (G protein) is the major surface antigen responsible for virus attachment and induction of protective immune responses in fish. Because of its immunogenic properties, the glycoprotein gene has been used in the development of experimental vaccines for aquaculture species, including recombinant DNA and plant-based vaccine platforms.
