The event combined GHB614 x LLCotton25 was obtained by the applicant through classical breeding by crosses between two genetically modified plants, cotton and cotton GHB614 LLCotton25 and selecting individuals with the desired characteristics. The agency has analyzed the characteristics of tolerance to the herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium, conferred by genes 2mepsps and bar respectively. Both events have been individually released commercially by CTNBio through Technical Opinion In 1.521/2008 (Official Gazette No 171 of 09.04.2008), which refers to the commercial release of genetically modified cotton tolerant to glufosinate ammonium (cotton LibertyLink Event LLCotton25) and Technical Opinion 2.754/2010 (Official Gazette No 241 of 17/12/2010),

Within the scope of the powers conferred through article 14 of Law No. 11105/05, CTNBio ruled that the application meets the pertinent rules and regulations enacted to ensure biosecurity of the environment, agriculture, and human and animal health, concluding, further, that cotton GlyTol x LibertyLink (GTxLL) is substantively equivalent to conventional cotton and that its consumption is safe for human and animal health. In regard to the environment, CTNBio found that production of cotton GlyTol x LibertyLink (GTxLL) cotton is not a potential cause of significant environmental degradation and that it maintains an identical relationship with the biota as conventional cotton

The analysis of the results of all tests indicated that the cotton LibertyLink x GlyTol is considered substantially equivalent to other cotton varieties. The restricted areas for planting of genetically modified cotton laid down in Annex of MAPA Ordinance No. 21/2005, must be strictly observed.
