MON 89034 corn was produced through the methodology of genetic transformation mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens using the binary plasmid PVZMIR245. This plasmid consists of two separate T-DNA regions, each surrounded by the left and right edges of the Ti plasmid (7). One TDNA (T-DNA I) contains the genes cry1A.105 and cry2Ab2, while the other T-DNA (T-DNA II) contains the nptII gene, which confers resistance to the antibiotic kanamycin and was used in the initial process of cell selection. transformed. Food and feed products containing MON 89034 corn, or made with MON 89034 corn, are as safe for human and animal consumption as foods made with conventional corn. The potential adverse effects of MON 89034 corn on animal health was evaluated from studies with mammals and birds, corroborating the results on the food safety of MON 89034 corn and the proteins Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 expressed in it.

A 90-day rat study was performed to assess the potential adverse effects of MON 89034 corn on animal health (29). In this study, MON 89034 corn grains were fed to rats for 90 days. The results showed that there were no deaths or clinical observations related to the treatments, as well as changes in the parameters evaluated: body weights; food consumption; hematology; serum chemistry; and urine analysis. Phenotypic, agronomic and ecological interactions evaluations indicate that MON 89034 corn is comparable to conventional corn and does not have a greater risk of becoming an invasive plant.

Data on ecological interactions indicated that MON 89034 corn does not confer any increased susceptibility or tolerance to specific diseases, insects (except target insects) or abiotic stresses. These data corroborate the idea that MON corn 89034 does not present a risk of becoming an invasive plant or of generating a significant ecological impact when compared to conventional corn.

Several field experiments to evaluate agronomic and phenotypic characteristics of MON 89034 corn - compared to conventional control corn of the same phenotype - were carried out during the 2007/2008 harvest in four representative locations for corn in Brazil: Cachoeira Dourada, MG, Sorriso, MT, Rolândia, PR and Não-Me-Toque, RS. The agronomic and phenotypic characteristics of MON 89034 corn were evaluated in relation to the ecological impact and its potential as an invasive plant. These evaluations included several parameters, among them: plant growth and development characteristics, seed germination, pollen characteristics and observations for each plant-insect, plant-disease and plant-abiotic stress interaction. The results indicated that MON 89034 corn does not have characteristics that could confer risk as an invasive plant, or increase ecological risk compared to conventional corn.
