Article 3 of the Cartagena Protocol contains the definition for living modified organism (or LMO for short). The terms underlined in this slide are key concepts in this definition.

According to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety 1:

(i) “Living modified organism” means any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic material obtained through the use of modern biotechnology;
