RE: Abiotic stress message to core members [#1376]
Dear All:

it seems that this mail is easier than portal thread. While I put the same message to portal,
While adding basic information is cardinal, but there has been a first round of the discussion, and the further dsocument elaboration shall be built on this.
Since Sol and Branka did not have chance on the bureau phone conference, I shall past below the general observation of the first round of on-line forum.

The memo was made for the Nureau teleconfenrece.

AHTEG tele-conference on July 24 from 8 pm to 9:30pm, 2009
SWG chairs, rapporteur and Secretariats
1. i) good conceptual comments. Not really discussion enter into the guiding doc draft. Just mention own opinions in the most of cases, Jack Tom, and David replied as well as Sol. Elizabeth,  ii) Bioremediation shall be out for discussion
2. Focus on specific types of LMOs: abiotic stress tolerant crops. Furthermore, on drought tolerant crop with scientific information, may be maize. Socio-economic, food safety.  Precaution on possibilities on superweediness due to increased fitness etc. Also on long term environmental effects : but these are already in Annex III of the Protocol.
3. Participation half and half with party/non-party observer; conflict, not in Annex III yes in Annex III, but former cases, do not have much of past experience in the Protocol formation. Include Socio-economic or not.  Also many do not read the draft guiding doc. Base-line: ecology or agriculture and precautionary principle and precautionary approach. Not consideration of product base approach, rather with the components only of LMos. Background info, read literatures, participation of the experts directly working on the traits, people are zooming or peeping, but not much participation.
4. Scope,  Reviewing and Revising with party members, give more home work, the draft doc with using case applications with scientific information, such as maize with drought tolerance and potatoes with salt tolerance. Invite further experts. May be two months for discussion with 2-3 cases, revision toward December, 2009. Then hearing by a diverse audience.
5. I will not be in the Hague. Academic institution meeting will be in Japan, Feb 2010, and some of SWG members may participate.s

KInd regards,

Kazuo
