Opening of discussion for comments on the draft guidance on LM trees [#2482]
Dear members of the SWG on LM Trees,

I am pleased to inform that the first draft of the guidance on “Risk Assessment of LM Trees” is available at http://bch.cbd.int/onlineconferences/trees_swg_ahteg_ra.shtml (thanks Beatrix for developing the draft) and would like to invite all members of the SWG to provide comments on this draft.

Your comments may focus, for instance, on:

i) Whether all issues relevant to this topic have been included in this draft and, if not, which ones should be added; and

ii) Suggestions for improvements to the current text and/or structure.

Please provide also suggestions for background documents to be included. Please do so by uploading the document you think is relevant or by providing its full reference, and indicate to which section(s) of the guidance the document is relevant.

Please send your comments as soon as possible but no later than 29 July 2011 (1:00GMT).

I look forward to your active participation.

Thank you and best regards,
Manoela

Hello everyone

Attached is a track changes version of the LM trees document. I have made a very small number of suggested modifications and included the complete citation of an additional reference.

I want to thank Beatrix for all her hard work in developing this text and getting it to us in a timely manner.  It was a great effort.

Please find attached some edits in track change.  Overall, we need to avoid statements that are policy rather than guidance and avoid highlighting issues that are already addressed in the Roadmap - issues that apply to all LM plants.  It is my belief that this document should present guidance that is unique to LM trees.

Thanks to Beatrix again.

Best regards,
Tom

RE: Opening of discussion for comments on the draft guidance on LM trees [#2532]
Dear all:

Sorry for slow participation due to a professional trip to Finland.
Thanking Elizabeth to draft a starting document, I would be commenting to rebuild the contents.

Use of terms: genetically modified is not suitable, it is used at some specific regions. LM trees or transgenic or genetically engineered would represent the present subjects.

The docucment shall be focused: discussing fruit trees in agriculture and plantation trees are not easily recognizable by the novice users who are principal targets of the doc. Fruit trees are already entities of agriculture and Roadmap guiding doc suffices for the purpose.

Green lined part could be deleted due to lack of relevance or already existing in guiding doc as concept to make simplified and easy-to capture the content for the novice users/ beginners.

Yellow lined parts should be further discussed to consolidate as some mixture or shortened statements.

In general, references shall be more focused on well-discussed info such from OECD bio or consensus docs. Books if quoted, specific pages should be indicated as later on those books will not be available in a whole book copy as info doc. Any single publication even when it is peer-reveiwed as a journal publication, but if it is the subject of yet to debate and not to be settle down as generally agreed, they should be refrained for citation as the users of the docs are very novice in judging the contents.

I shall be trying to add up the references later on the next stage.

Thanks for attention.

Kind regards,

Kazuo

POSTED ON BEHALF OF RICARDA STEINBRECHER

----

Dear Beatrix, dear all.

Thank you to Beatrix for this comprehensive first draft guidance doc
on LM tree RA/RM.
I find it includes most of the important points - and fine tuning of
text can take place once we have all discussed content a bit more. So
I didn't pay too much attention to this yet.
I appreciate and agree with the contextualisation right in the
beginning, giving the appropriate background to the issue of
transgenic trees within the CBD & CPB.

Please see attached doc with track changes for more general comments.
I have en large not attempted to go too much into filing and nuances
of language, and hope my points can be understood.

Concerning literature, I have so far added only one, but will want to
send further suggestions a bit later, if that is acceptable.

With best wishes,

from a sunny Oxford,

Ricarda
