Paulo Paes de Andrade holds a position as Full Professor of Genetics at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil.
He obtained his PhD in Biophysics (Cell Biology) in 1983 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
As a Alexander von Humboldt fellow, he did his post-doc in immunology and molecular genetics at the Institute of Clinical Microbiology, University of Erlangen-Nuernberg, Federal Republic of Germany (1990-1991).
In the last fifteen years Dr. Andrade has been working on genetics and molecular biology of parasites and plants, as well as on genomics, transcriptomics and biosafety. He was the representative of the Ministry of External Relations at the National Authority for Biosafety (CTNBio) in Brazil from October 2006 to September 2012.

Through collaborations with other research intitutions in Brazil and abroad Prof. Andrade has established himself as an expert on GMO risk assessment, with many publications (books, book chapters and papers) devoted to risk assessment and GMO regulatory questions.
