Sorghum ABS188 was genetically modified through a transformation mediated by Agrobacterium to improve bioavailable levels of vitamin A, zinc and iron.
Gene LPA1 was inserted to reduce the synthesis of phytic acid which reduces sorghum’s zinc and iron availability to human. Genes PSY1 and CRT1 were inserted in sorghum to synthesize phytoene synthetases and phytoene desaturase which are required for the synthesis of beta-carotene (vitamin A).
