Ornamental varieties of Tulipa gesneriana are found in cultivation only. In the wild, in mountainous areas with temperate climates and dry summers.

Naturalized in parts of central and southern Europe and North America. Found in cultivation in all temperate regions of the world for flower production and in environmental amenity situations. Bulbs and cut flowers are traded globally.

Tulipa gesneriana contains an allergen, tuliposide A, which causes dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Contact dermatitis is a problem in some workers handling tulip bulbs. The condition, known as tulip fingers, is caused by exposure totuliposide A. Poisoning in humans and dogs may also occur when tulip bulbs are ingested due to the presence of the glycoprotein tulipin, tuliposid A, tuliposid B, and lectins.
