Additional Information
The Aedes aegypti sex-specific intron allows for female-specific expression of proteins through alternative splicing. In females, the intron is spliced out after transcription leaving the protein sequence for translation. However, in males, the intron is not spliced out and contains multiple stop codons upstream of the protein, which disrupt translation of the downstream protein.
