Additional Information
The doublesex (dsx) splicing module allows for the female-specific splicing and expression. The module consists of dsx exons 2, 3, 3a, 4b, 4 and 5, together with dsx introns 2, 3 and 4. In females, the splicing results in transcripts containing either exons 2,3,4 and 5 or exons 2, 3a, 4 and 5 in frame with downstream sequences. In males, alternative splicing produces a transcript containing exons 2 and 5. However, unlike the female transcripts, the male transcripts have a frame-shift and are expected to be in frame with a stop codon within exon 5. Thus, transcripts in males are likely degraded by nonsense-mediated decay.
