The 3xP3 promoter consists of three P3 binding elements and a minimal promoter from the Drosophila hsp70 gene. It contains three binding sites for Pax-6/eyeless homodimers upstream to a TATA box. The promoter is photoreceptor-specific and has been used to express fluorescent proteins in the eyes of Drosophila, the housefly, beetles, butterflies, mosquitoes, and even flatworms. It also promote expression in the larval nervous system. The promoter may not be active in tephritid flies.
