Mesic (moderate moisture) to wet forests. Epiphytic, occasionally epipetric or terrestrial. Rhizomes shortly creeping, often knotted, fleshy, with fleshy roots
Widespread in the Old World tropics. The native range is Tanzania, West Indian Ocean, Tropical & Subtropical Asia to Pacific (Madagascar, the Seychelles eastward through Asia and Australia to the Hawaiian Islands, Marquesas Islands and north to the southern islands of Japan). The fern was introduced to Florida.
