Characteristics of the protein coding sequence
Crystal protein Cry2Aa
EN
Crystal protein Cry2Aa is a crystal delta-endotoxin that is produced by Bacillus thuringiensis. The protein has a molecular weight of roughly 71 kDa (633 amino acids). The toxin domain is located at the N-terminus of the protein and likely has a similar mode of action to other crystal proteins. Thus, it binds proteins in the epithelial gut lining and oligomerizes to form pores, which then allows for an influx of water, cell swelling and eventual lysis. This leads to the destruction of the larval midgut epithelium and death of susceptible larvae. The protein is active on both Lepidoptera (e.g., Geometridae) and Dipteran pests.
