Streptococcus pyogenes are known colonizes the throat, genital mucosa, rectum and skin of humans.

Streptococcus pyogenes infects an estimated 18.1 million people worldwide and causes in 500,000 deaths each year. It causes both invasive and non-invasive diseases, such as pharyngitis, scarlet fever, impetigo, cellulitis, type II necrotizing fasciitis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, acute rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Several antibiotic resistance strains have emerged.

Streptococcus pyogenes is a Gram-positive, aerotolerant bacteria. It is non-motile and non-spore forming. It has the ability to form biofilms. The CRISPR-Cas system was discovered in this bacteria and lead to the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for its discovery.
