The centres of genetic diversity of Musa acuminata subsp. malaccensis are south and southeast Asia including southern Thailand extending to Peninsular Malaysia. They can also be found in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Musa acuminata subsp. malaccensis is resistant to two Fusarium wilt diseases, Tropical Race 4 (TR4) and Subtropical Race 4 (STR4). Genetic data also show that this subspecies contributed significantly to the domestication of edible bananas, often through hybridization with other Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana subspecies. It is often used in breeding programs across the region of Peninsular Malaysia and parts of Southeast Asia due to its traits like disease resistance and adaptability.
