Tropical and subtropical Americas; the species is native to the New World, with a historical range from the southern United States through Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
No single centre is confirmed. Geographic genetic structure occurs across Caribbean and South American populations, while genetic variability is broadly distributed across South America.
Tropical and subtropical terrestrial environments with warm temperatures and suitable humidity. Larvae develop in living tissues of warm-blooded hosts; pupae develop in soil or leaf litter.
Historically distributed through tropical and subtropical Americas and Caribbean. Present in South America, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico following the resurgence since 2023.
Larvae are obligate parasites causing primary traumatic myiasis in warm-blooded animals, including livestock, wildlife and humans. Untreated infestations may cause severe tissue damage and death.
